Detail from Sher Shah Suri’s fort at Rohtas, Pakistan. Rohtas is near the city of Jhelum in the Punjab. Suri (real name Farid Khan) was perhaps the most able administrator of the sub-continent, which he ruled from 1539 – 45. Rohtas Fort is a stupendous structure, mainly ruins now, and was built to keep the mighty Mughals out of India. The detail of the Arabic calligraphy is Allah, God.

Karomber Lake, Pakistan, Pakistan photo
This beautiful amazingly blue lake lies just near border Pakistan where it meets Wakhan. This lake is the highest one in Pakistan and 10th highest in the world. The lake is quite long and almost unexplored not many locals (as we met all the foreighners during the trek) go for this trek. The reasons include a very minor information is available for the trek and not many tour organizers arrange Pamir-Wakhan tours. As said by a group of travellers this is the best trek they had ever done and were attempting it for the fifth time!!!

Rohtas Fort, Pakistan, Pakistan photo
Rohtas Fort is the Big Daddy of all forts! Sir Olaf Caroe (1892-1981) described it thus: “There it stands, sprawling across a low rocky hill a few miles north of Jhelum. It’s great ramparts growing from the cliff like the wall of China, looking north a sandy stream bed to the low hills of the salt range and beyond them, to the snows of Pir Panjal. The circumference is large enough easily to hold a couple of Divisions of troops. As you approach the fort, the crenellations look like ominous rows of helmeted warriors watching you with disapproval. It is an awe-inspiring sight”.
